Are Your Brakes Checked Properly?
Now through September 17, 2011 is Brake Safety Week throughout North America.  Fleets are encouraged to go over the proper break check procedure with their drivers and mechanics. CVSA-certified inspectors and brake suppliers will also be conducting educational activities during the duration of the week.

Why is there a week dedicated completely to brake safety? Because according to CVSA Roadcheck 2011, more than 50 percent of roadside out-of-service violations are brake related.  The majority of these brake out-of-service violations are due to the brake stroke being beyond its maximum adjustment limit.

What does this mean for drivers and fleet owners?  You can expect to see truck enforcement officials out checking trucks specifically for out-of-service brakes.  You can also expect to see performance-based brake testers in jurisdictions and inspection locations that are participating in the Brake Safety Week.

How can you make sure your drivers are prepared?  The best way to be prepared is to check your brakes with accordance to the pre-trip standards.  You can have any number of tools to check your brakes, but if you don't use it, or use it improperly, you could find your rigs out-of-service.  But making sure your drivers are equipped with proper tools and knowledge can keep your trucks on the road.

A few inexpensive and very useful tools for checking brakes include The Pocket Inspector and Brake Sentry.  These make it very simple to check your brake stroke. The Pocket Inspector will also check brake lining, tread depth, and windshield cracks. More information can be found on these products by following their individual links above.

This week is also Truck Driver Appreciation Week.  Unique Truck Equipment would like to say thank you to all the drivers out there.  Your dedication and hard work does not go unnoticed.  Have a great week and stay safe!
